More about Backup
Last months newsletter about Backup was well received. We've already had an instance of a customer implementing a backup strategy that saved the day. But, with the good comes the bad. We have a customer who read the article and realized a need for a backup strategy. However, they did not implement the plan. Sure enough, their hard drive crashed and the data was lost. Don't let this happen to you.

What is FTP?

In this day and age of instant gratification, more and more software companies are issuing software upgrade via File Transfer Protocol (ftp) download.

FTP is the simplest and most secure way to exchange files over the Internet. The ability to transfer files back-and-forth makes FTP essential for anyone, amateurs and professionals alike.

An FTP address looks a lot like an HTTP, or Website, address except it uses the prefix ftp:// instead of http://.

Example Website address: http://www.printpoint.com
Example FTP site address: ftp://ftp.printpoint.com

Most often, a computer with an FTP address is dedicated to receive an FTP connection. Just as a computer that is setup to host Web pages is referred to as a Web server or Website, a computer dedicated to receiving an FTP connection is referred to as an FTP server or FTP site.

Why all this about FTP?
A number of PrintPointers are used to using their Web Browser to connect to our FTP site. However, with Internet Security becoming more of an issue, this means of downloading files is becoming more and more difficult.

There are many FTP Clients on the market. You can do an Internet Search and you'll get quite the list. Fetch is one of the more popular Clients for the Macintosh and the list is extremely long for Windows machines. If you're looking for a no-cost solution, you might look at CyberDuck for the Mac. For the PC, I use FireFox as my browser and the FireFTP plug-in.

It's still an option now to use your Internet Browser for downloading but that option is quickly going away. I would like to encourage (plead) with all of you to get FTP Client Software as soon as possible.

PrintPoint 5.1 Update

You've all been waiting patiently for PrintPoint 5.1. As of the release of this newsletter, we have, what we believe to be, the final beta being tested and near complete. Some of our users are putting it through its paces. So far, things look promising. We are encouraged that the December newsletter will be about the success of PrintPoint 5.1

Still Running PrintPoint 4.6?

For those of you still running PrintPoint 4.6 the upgrade process to PrintPoint 5.1 will be a bit more time consuming. We upgraded the database engine in PrintPoint 5.0 and now again in PrintPoint 5.1. This means that you will have to first upgrade to 5.0 before going to 5.1.
