Virtual Store Folder

Our PC users have come to expect all of PrintPoint's client support files to be in the PrintPoint_Client_Folder. While this is true for XP and earlier versions of Windows, Microsoft has changed the playing field for Vista by creating a Virtual Store Folder that will now store these support files.

When this was first brought to my attention I thought, "There goes Microsoft trying to re-invent the wheel again". But, after doing some research, now I think the "Virtual Store Folder" is one of Microsoft's best ideas in quite some time. Before you think I've lost my mind, let me explain.

In past versions of Windows you either had to be a Local Administrator of a computer to run certain applications or you just could run them at all. Without Administrative Privileges you could not write data to any folders in the Program Files directory of Windows. Of course giving an average user Local Admin of a computer is a security nightmare for any IT Professional worth his salt. This is where the Virtual Store Folder comes into play.

So, what does the Virtural Store Folder do? It detects any write access to a file by a user that doesn't have rights to write to the file. It then makes a copy of the file in the user's virtual store and happily allows the user to write to the file in the virtualized directory where the user has full rights. Now users can do there job without having a security risk on your company network.

What does all this have to do with PrintPoint? When you do an upgrade to PrintPoint and we ask you to "throw out" the Languages Folder, you would normally find it in the PrintPoint_Client_Folder. However, on the Vista OS it's in the following location:

c:\users\(user name)\appdata\local\virtual store\program files\Printpoint_5_client_folder.
